Graveyard Keeper 2 Zombie Mastery & Perks: Why Your Zombie Won't Work, and How to Level It Up

Graveyard Keeper 2 Town Workshop: zombie workers at stations along conveyor belts under lantern light
Official Steam shot of the Town Workshop, with zombies on stations and conveyors. The store images include no zombie perk screen.

Your new zombie is standing at the bench doing nothing. That is not a bug: every zombie in Graveyard Keeper 2 starts with 0 mastery. This page explains how zombie mastery adds up, which tools to hand out, how perk points are earned, and how to spend a small red-skull budget on the perks that matter.

No zombie yet? First resurrect your first zombie with the table, collar and Reanimation Liquid.

TL;DR — Get an idle zombie working

Check Fix
Mastery below the recipe's need Give it the best tool for that mastery (+1 to +6)
Station needs a tool type Axe, hammer, pickaxe or shovel in its hand
No materials arrive Put a second zombie on a Zombie Supplier Station
Still short on mastery Spend the zombie's own points on +1 mastery nodes and a job perk
No perk slots left Add red skulls: organ swaps or a better collar

How zombie mastery adds up

A zombie has the Keeper's five masteries: Building, Smithing, Farming, Book writing and Anatomy. For any recipe, its mastery is:

nodes it bought on that tree + the tool in its hand + a perk for that kind of work

Tools: the fastest mastery boost

Give every new zombie the best tool you own for its job. It works the moment you equip it.

Mastery +1 +2 +4 +6
Building Rusty Axe / Pickaxe Bronze Axe / Pickaxe Iron Axe / Pickaxe Steel Axe / Pickaxe
Smithing Rusty Hammer Bronze Hammer Iron Hammer Steel Hammer
Farming Rusty Shovel, Basic Rod Bronze Shovel, Amateur Rod Iron Shovel, Advanced Rod Steel Shovel, Pro Rod
Book writing Primer, Bronze Talisman Dictionary, Silver Talisman Glossary, Golden Talisman —
Anatomy Butcher's Kit, Starter Alchemist's Kit Surgeon's Kit, Alchemist's Kit Master Surgeon's Kit, Good Alchemist's kit —

Watch the "tools" sets. Bronze tools give only +1 Smithing, Iron tools +2 and Steel tools +4. A plain Iron Hammer (+4) beats Iron tools (+2). Read the tooltip before you equip.

A shovel covers kitchen work, because cooking is Farming. Stations that need a specific tool are listed on the Zombies hub.

How zombies earn perk points

Zombies pay for their nodes with their own tech points, never the Keeper's:

To spend points, Inspect the zombie and open its perk trees. The first node on every tree is a +1 mastery upgrade (50 points on Building, Smithing and Farming; 25 blue on Book writing and Anatomy), and almost every perk sits behind it. The one exception is the Musician line on Book writing.

Tree Nodes Mastery from nodes Whole tree costs Paid in
Building 17 +9 4,600 red
Smithing 17 +9 4,450 red
Farming 17 +9 4,650 green
Book writing 19 +9 1,500 red + 835 blue red + blue
Anatomy 15 +9 1,500 red + 1,075 blue red + blue

Perk slots: one per red skull

Every node a zombie buys takes one red skull, mastery upgrade or perk.

So a 5-red zombie owns five nodes in total, across all five trees. Specialise: one zombie, one job. To add slots, put the zombie back on the autopsy table for red parts or swap in a higher collar. The steps are in build a 5 or 10 red skull worker. Golden collars need Smithing mastery 8 to craft; a soldier's stew gives +2 for a while.

Best perks by job

Quarry / lumber / digger Building Quarryman, Logger (200); Excavator (50) 6 ticks instead of 8
Smith Smithing Novice Blacksmith (100), Advanced Blacksmith (200), Master Blacksmith (500) +2 bronze, +4 iron, +6 steel
Glass Smithing Puff Master (200) +3 with glass
Miner Smithing / Building Zombie Miner (100); Magpie's Eye (500) Ore in 6 ticks; 10% chance of a Gem

Choir / Organ Book writing Novice → Skilled Musician → Maestro (10 / 25 / 50 blue) Church quality 2 / 4 / 7 from that zombie instead of 1
Fighter Smithing Impaler, Blindseye (200); Tin Can, Undead Resilience (400) +2 pike / +3 bow damage; +1 armor; 150 health

Costs are in red points unless marked blue or listed on the Farming tree (green).

Skip these: Wikily lists Novice Fisherman, Veteran Fisherman and Dead jeweler as having no effect. Also, several Book writing and Anatomy perks show +4 in the tooltip, but Wikily measures +3. Plan on +3.

Three example builds for a 5-red zombie

Five slots, five nodes. Start each tree with its 50-point +1 node.

Iron smith (550 red points)

Woodworker (650 red points)

Gardener (550 green points)

A choir zombie only needs 3 slots for the Musician line, which pays 85 blue points in total. Singing isn't crafting, so let it earn its points on a crafting station first.

Suppliers and haulers: don't waste red skulls

A workstation zombie doesn't fetch its own inputs. A zombie on a Zombie Supplier Station brings materials to the workstation zombies in its area and clears finished goods into chests. It needs no tool and no perks, so give that job to a 0–1 red body. Porters and the factory follow the same idea; see supplier & factory roles.

One creator's early setup is one specialist per mastery you need, plus a carrier. That keeps you under your zombie limit, which cuts sermon rewards when you go over.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Cause Fix
Stands idle at a bench Mastery 0 or too low Better tool, then +1 nodes
Idle at a quarry, digger or anvil Wrong tool type Pickaxe, shovel or hammer
Works once, then stops No supplier, or the output is full Add a supplier zombie; empty chests
Can't buy a node Nodes already equal red skulls Organ swap or higher collar
A perk stopped working Red count fell below node count Add red parts back
Kitchen zombie wastes ingredients Old bug Update; 1.006 fixed it

FAQ

Q: How should I spend a zombie's first perk points?
A: Buy the first +1 mastery node for the tree that matches its job, then add a job perk when you have a free red-skull slot. Nodes use the zombie's own tech points.

Q: How do I increase zombie mastery?
A: Three ways add together: the tool in its hand (+1 to +6), mastery nodes it buys on its own trees (+9 in total per tree), and job perks such as Master Carpenter (+4 when working with wood).

Q: How do zombies get perk points?
A: They earn their own tech points while crafting, and red tech points for winning battles. They never spend the Keeper's points. Open the zombie with Inspect to spend them.

Q: How many perks can a zombie have?
A: One node per red skull on its body. Mastery upgrades and perks both take a slot. A 5-red zombie can own 5 nodes; if its red count later drops, some nodes stop working until it has enough again.

Q: Which zombie perks are useless?
A: Wikily lists Novice Fisherman, Veteran Fisherman and Dead jeweler as having no effect, because zombies do no fishing and the jeweler recipes come out the same. Skip them.

Q: Do supplier zombies need mastery or perks?
A: No. A zombie on a Zombie Supplier Station needs no tool and no perks, so a 0–1 red body is fine for that job. Save high-red bodies for crafting stations.
